CPoint: Dissolving the Author's Dilemma
Automated knowledge management techniques critically depend on the availability of semantically enhanced documents which are hard to come by in practice. Starting from a detailed look at the motivations of users to produce semantic data, we argue that the authoring problem experienced by MKM is actually an author’s dilemma. An analysis of the content authoring process suggests that the dilemma ...
متن کاملImplicit bias.
e all have it. Implicit bias was the shorthand that allowed our distant ancestors to make split-second decisions (friend or foe?) based on incomplete information. It provided a razor-thin reaction-time advantage that could mean life or death. But today, we no longer need to assume that people who do not look or sound like us pose an immediate threat. Instead, successful organizations and people...
متن کاملImplicit Bias in the Courtroom
Given the substantial and growing scientific literature on implicit bias, the time has now come to confront a critical question: What, if anything, should we do about implicit bias in the courtroom? The author team comprises legal academics, scientists, researchers, and even a sitting federal judge who seek to answer this question in accordance with behavioral realism. متن کاملThe Bias - Variance dilemma of the Monte
We investigate the setting in which Monte Carlo methods are used and draw a parallel to the formal setting of statistical inference. In particular, we nd that Monte Carlo approximation gives rise to a bias-variance dilemma. We show that it is possible to construct a biased approximation scheme with a lower approximation error than a related unbiased algorithm.
متن کاملResponsibility for Implicit Bias
Philosophers who have written about implicit bias have claimed or implied that individuals are not responsible, and therefore not blameworthy, for their implicit biases, and that this is a function of the nature of implicit bias as implicit: below the radar of conscious reflection, out of the control of the deliberating agent, and not rationally revisable in the way many of our reflective belie...
